Orchestral composition
Assignment 2: Write a short work for piano and a single-line instrument eg: Oboe, Trumpet, Viola
The work must be traditionally notated using software (not hand-written). It can explore conventional or extended playing techniques, but should show an understanding of the range and possibilities of the chosen instruments, and how they interact.
Alongside our genres class, we had been studying Serialism in our history class. I was fascinated and confused by the schoenburg 12 tone technique. In order to understand it a little better, i made it my task to attempt to write a piece involving this technique.

Assignment 1: Write a short solo piece for an orchestral instrument of your choice in traditional staff notation. The work must be presented in hand-written form, and cannot use electronic processing or accompaniment. It can explore conventional or extended playing techniques, but should show an understanding of the range and possibilities of the chosen instrument.
I chose to write this piece for solo flute, because i love the sound that a flute makes!

No Safe Place

My creative process had found new inspiration and had changed greatly during the time of the corona virus. Realizing the dangers of travelling outside i became obsessed with collecting feild recordings to capture the world that was now perceived to be quite dangerous to explore. From my travels i had already a decent collection of sounds to play with, so i applied effects to those feild recordings (with a touch of synth sounds) to create a dark atmosphere.
Line assignment: Wash Away Marketplace
|
|
My fascination with tonality lead me to question why we have 12 chromatic pitches in western music. Where the harmonic series functions around different numbers. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, notes per octave.
The equation to work out chromatic pitches for equal temperament is Y=2^(x/12)x440
For this piece i wanted to try out a different tuning system where Y=2^(x/16)x440
the result was some creepy sounding fairground music for a long time, but eventually i came up with this piece, which i think sounds like walking through a marketplace while a busker plays on pitched bowls.

Timbre Techniques: Winter Wasteland
|
|
Winter Wastelands again looks at recreating everyday life sounds. for this piece i used a bunch of sine tones and white noise to create a dynamic soundscape, and recreated the sounds of footsteps and strange creatures in the world of a desolate winter wasteland.
The main character of this story eventually finds a cave and the footsteps scho throughout it. They sit down and light a fire. Suddenly the soundscape is filled with warmth.

Rhythm Assignment - 2018 (Phasing time signatures)
|
|
The concept of this piece was to create a song that has phasing rhythms, and experimenting with different time signatures in the same score.
After working on this piece i realised that it is foolish to have different time signatures for different parts represented that way on the score. If a group of musicians was to play this piece, it would be difficult to find their place as a group, because everyone has different bar numbers. Having repeating phrases of varying length however can create a very interesting effect. -Daniel

workshop sounds - 2018 (sound objects recreated on synths)
|
|
The concept of this piece was to capture the sounds of my old work environment - working as a Machinist.
i went to my old workplace to record a whole bunch of machine sounds, and then i went home and analysed the sounds that i found in that environment. From there, I attempted to recreate the sounds i found and created a piece which reflected something that used to happen in my day to day life.
The narrative of the piece tells the story of clement and I working in the boring shop. you can hear a bunch of workshop sounds in the background as clement and i are working away. Suddenly nearby there a heavy barrel gets dropped and falls with a heavy clunk. Clement turns off his machine to assess what had happened. When he realises that everything is fine, he continues work and his machine starts up again. -Daniel
